If you retire after 40 years in the ski business, what next? Well... in our case the next phase was to buy the family cherry farm, pull out the old trees and plant a vineyard. We said we'd never go into another weather dependent business, but here we are - growing grapes, enjoying the seasons, and spending lots of time communing with the vines. So much for
Michael & Nancy's retirement!
Our farm sits on one of the highest ridge tops in Benzie County. The vineyard overlooks Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the Crystal Lake Valley. With the help of our incredible family & friends, we harvest 2.5 acres of Chardonnay grapes and 2.5 acres of Blaufrankisch. Three different wines are available from our 2017 harvest - a Blaufrankisch Rosé, an unwooded Chardonnay, and a Blaufrankisch red blend.
The 2017 Chardonnay, a blend of our grapes and those from two other vineyards, was bottled by Bowers Harbor Vineyards. The Blaufrankisch Rosé, made from our grapes alone, and the Blaufrankisch red blend were the creation of Bryan Ulbrich, the very talented, award winning Wine Sherpa at
Left Foot Charley Urban Winery.
Both wineries are in Traverse City, Mi.
Rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind & a tiny bit of sun. Crazy weather & hearty help.
Nearly 15 tons of grapes picked on two Saturdays.
We may not win any fashion contests, but the grapes all got harvested!
Following fermentation, our rosé was aged in stainless steel for 5 months. Blaufränkisch is an Austrian grape variety with a spicy delicate taste that grows very well in Northern Michigan. So well, in fact, that this wine recently received two major awards:
A Silver Medal at the prestigious Dan Berger 2018 International Wine Competition
in Napa Valley, California
The Double Gold Best of Class award at the 2018 Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition.
Bowers Harbor Vineyards, was the first winery in Michigan to produce an unoaked Chardonnay. This vintage was fermented entirely in stainless steel, and expresses fresh fruit flavors of apple, pear and citrus, followed by a crisp, clean finish.
It's the perfect complement to el fresco summer dining in Northern Michigan.
Our 2016 vintage Blaufrankisch red wine, bottled by Left Foot Charley Urban Winery in Traverse City was awarded a coveted Jefferson Cup award at the 18th annual Jefferson Cup Invitational Competition held in Kansas City, MO. November 16 & 17, 2017. Of the 750 participating wines from 27 different states, our Blaufrankisch was one of 16 Jefferson Cup awardees!
